She quickly got out of bed and stood on the ground barefoot, her body crouched as she stared at the thing standing in front of the window.

It moved, as if it had not seen Qin Ruan's presence, taking heavy steps towards Ling Xiaoxuan.

As it moved, Qin Ruan saw its ugly face clearly.

Its deep red copper bell-like eyes were filled with greed, and a large black hole of a mouth was gaping, revealing sharp and sparse teeth inside.

Its mouth took up half of its face, and something dripped from it onto the ground.

It was tall and had no clothing, with dirty brown hair all over its body, and a very frightening appearance.

Qin Ruan could hear its heavy breathing, but he didn't know if it was due to excitement or some other reason.

At first glance, Qin Ruan could identify what it was - a mountain sprite, or shan xiao in Chinese.

In the Classic of Mountains and Seas, it is recorded that in the south, there are giant men with human faces, long arms, black hair all over, and backward-facing feet. They smile when they see people, with lips covering their faces, and flee at the sight of them.

The shan xiao, on the other hand, looks like a child with one leg, preying on people at night. It is a monster that eats people.

However, the shan xiao in front of them differs somewhat from the one described in the book. It has two legs and a tall, robust body, resembling a hybrid between a shan xiao and some other creature.

As soon as the shan xiao appeared, it headed straight for Ling Xiaoxuan. It was clear that it was coming for her.

Seeing the shan xiao getting closer to Ling Xiaoxuan, who was still asleep, Qin Ruan squinted her eyes and quickly took action. She picked up something from the table nearby and threw it at the shan xiao.

A muffled sound echoed as the book Qin Ruan picked up hit the shan xiao's thick fur. From the sound, it was clear that the impact was not enough to harm the shan xiao.

Nonetheless, the shan xiao stopped in its tracks, turned around, and stared straight at Qin Ruan with its large copper bell-like eyes.

The disturbed shan xiao looked unhappy, angry, and greedy, as well as sinister and ugly.

Ling Xiaoxuan sat up on her bed, still with her eyes closed. She rubbed her eyes with one hand, sounding groggy and sleepy.
